A review of Goodbye Lenin! [2002]
If you've seen my Flickr or Livejournal recently you might have seen I
got a bit of a fascination with Berlin when we were over there earlier
this year. I've seen Goodbye Lenin before but I saw it this week for
the first time since our visit and it made it very powerful knowing
the locations.
Apart from that, this is a perfect film to show people who don't
believe that Germans can be funny. It's quite dark humour but it is
brilliant.
The film is set around the collapse of communist rule and the end of
East Germany and a woman who's been in a coma for the duration. To
protect her from shock, her son recreates a lost world of communism
for her. It's certainly not sympathetic to the communists but the
capitalists don't get off lightly either.
If you're not afraid of films that aren't from Hollywood then be sure
to check this one out.
